Today is a red-letter day: my lovely wife and I tied the knot three years ago today. So far, marital life has been quite enjoyable, and I have a suspicion that the next 87 years will be just as happy. When we attend weddings these days, Abbie and I always discuss our plan to win those dance-offs where couples remain dancing longer the longer they have been married.

To commemorate this day, here are my two favorite photos from our wedding day.
Here we are enjoying our first dance, which was Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."

And I love this picture! I have no idea why we look so irate, but it doesn't seem to have lasted too long:Happy anniversary, Abbie!

Hello, loyal readers of Abbie's blog! I am her devoted husband, David, who is taking up the reins of Chick in the Czech while she studies like mad for the bar exam.

In this post, let me help you set your expectations for this blog over the next month:

  • Fun Thing Friday will continue to be a weekly feature.
  • Paco may be featured more heavily than he sometimes has been.
  • Lengthy discussion of actuarial science and mortality table trends!*
  • My erstwhile blog, Only Palaver, has fallen by the wayside several times as I have run out of steam. I will make a monstrous effort to maintain my steam over the next month.
  • I may regale you with tales of my budding cooking skills, which are, unfortunately, still negligible.
I hope you enjoy the adventures we will have over the next few weeks as much as me.

*Mortality tables may not actually appear as often as some of us might wish.

Fun thing Friday: Flake

I apologize for the light posting over the past few days/weeks. Posting really just becomes a secondary priority to a bar studier, though. However, starting July 1, you will be graced by a guest poster: my wonderful husband, who has volunteered to keep this blog rolling for me during the month of July. I know that David has a few funny topics up his sleeve, and I'm excited to see what he does here!

This has always been one of my very favorite songs, and I love Jack Johnson. I think that it reminds me of summer:

Hilarious video

...spoofing what I see every day in my bar lecture. This is soooo funny...and not too far from the truth. I will be honest, this will probably be more humorous to my fellow BarBri students...

Bikram Yoga

My friend and I have been going to Bikram Yoga for the past few weeks. I used to practice yoga more often and found it very fulfilling. Besides running, it is a great exercise for me. I think that I enjoy exercises that involve personal challenges. In running I constantly battle the mental block I have about going further. In yoga, I used to battle the urge to twitch or something. In Bikram Yoga, I battle my urge to run screaming out of the room.

You see, the room is 105 degrees while you practice yoga. Each session lasts 90 minutes and is comprised out of the same postures every single time. But, each time, I experience a completely different class and a completely different challenge. The first time we went, the teacher advised us not to worry about the postures, but that our goal was to simply stay in the room the entire 90 minutes. We thought that it would be pretty easy to stay in the room because 105 doesn't seem to be THAT hot. Hoo boy, we were wrong. It was SO hot and we began sweating like crazy after the first two seconds of being in the room. But both of us were successful in our endeavor.

The second time was easier and I could easily accomplish the postures and even handle the heat, but I went last night and it was extremely difficult again. It was almost worse than the first time because I knew that I was able to do everything, but I just could not because my mind kept telling me that I could not. SO frustrating.

I love Bikram yoga because I can't concentrate on anything else but my postures, breathing, and staying in the room because if I stop concentrating on that, I will just leave the room. The entire time I have to battle with the urge to just leave. I also love the feeling of sweating so much that your body feels flushed out and clean after it is all over. Plus, the stretching feels good as well. Finally, I love how attuned I am with my body while in the room. The slightest breeze on my foot seems so sensational to me.

Have you ever tried yoga or Bikram yoga? Do you like it?

Happy Summer!

Happy (late) first day of summer (yesterday)! Summer may be my favorite season (although I could make that argument for every season). I was thinking about my favorite parts of summer, including jumping into a nice, cool pool on a hot day, laying outside and just basking in the sunshine, barbecues with friends, ice cream, and hot, sticky evenings surrounded by lightening bugs.

What are your favorite parts of summer?

Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers out there!!! In his homily last night our priest discussed the importance of fathers, and I could not agree more. Fathers serve a very important role in any child's life.

I am lucky enough to have a wonderful dad who has always been a great father. Not only do my brother and I look up to him because he is a great person toward others, but he has also given us very much support through the years. I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for my dad. Thanks so much for all of your support, dad!!!

Also, I have to write about my grandpa, who is also a wonderful support to me throughout the years. He has always been so helpful and interested in my academic life, and I knew that I would always be met with an interested ear whenever I had a random story or interesting tidbit from school. Thanks so much for always being there for me, grandpa. It matters more than you know!

Happy father's day to all of the other fathers, including my father-in-law, brother-in-law, and uncles. Have a great day today!

Barbri Lecturers

This summer, as I mentioned, I am taking Barbri, which is a bar review course. Every day I watch lectures. Now that I'm in the midst of crazy studying, I have begun to have a very bad sense of humor. Last night:

Abbie: David, come look at this guy. He. IS. HILARIOUS. SO funny. He makes contracts soooo funny.

David: um, okay. Let me see.

(I play the short video for him that involves armadillos eating tacos--- anybody who has taken Barbri will know exactly to what I'm referring.)

David: ....

Abbie: Dude, that is hilarious. It is SO funny. How can you not think that it is funny!?

David: Um....I'll see ya later, babe.

I can only imagine that this will go downhill from here.

Fresh flowers

One of my favorite things is fresh flowers. I love them. When I was little, I always went home with a huge bouquet of freshly cut flowers from my grandma's house.

I bought these flowers from Target on Thursday night for a pretty decoration in our house. I just adore the orange-peach color and it is the perfect little bit of brightness for our kitchen.

Do you ever indulge in flowers for your home?

This weekend we went to Nara, a Japanese robata (do I know what that means? Nope.) in downtown KC, with some friends. We had a great time sitting on the patio and eating delicious Japanese food, including sushi, beef, stir fry, and dumplings. Yummers.

I look horrible in this picture, but I just wanted to show the fun view we had on the patio. Our service was pretty good and the food was delicious.

Tip: if you want to sit on the patio, go ahead and ask to do so when making your reservations. The hostesses were so friendly and nice when I called appx. 2 hours ahead of time, and I thought that was great. Also, at around 10 p.m., Nara's happy hour starts. During that time they have three dollar sushi, and actually good sushi. My husband and I decided that next time going there for happy hour would be as delicious as the dinner, because the sushi we had was very good.

Summer Cobb Salad

I adore salads in the summer. This week David made me a delicious cobb salad. He started with spinach, added bacon, tomatoes, onions, and avocado. He also toasted homemade croutons in the oven (cut up some old bread, add olive oil, spice with seasoned salt). The key to a good cobb salad is to mix everything really well. This makes the avocado spread everywhere and it creates a creamy consistency.

Finally, for your enjoyment, here is an adorable picture of an unspoiled kitty:

La Bodega take two

We went to La Bodega again this weekend. I can't rave enough about this restaurant. The food was again, awesome. We had the fried artichokes wrapped in ham first, and it was SO tasty.

We also tried this delicious Kahula drink. The waitress put Bacardi 151 in a glass, set it on fire, put cinnamon in the glass, and spun it, putting on a show for the entire restaurant. Then, she added Kahula, coffee, and whipped cream. We all split the drink at our table, which is advisable because it is very rich:

Hospital Hill 10k

My friend Julie, David, and I all ran the Hospital Hill 10k this weekend. My mom ran the 5k. The race was a great time, and very well run. The course took us through parts of crown center, up hospital hill (dur), and midtown. Julie and I were very proud of ourselves because we did not overexert ourselves during the race but still managed to run it all in 1:15!

The loot was also cool: we got running shirts and these adorable flip flops with a race map on the soles. After the race, each participant received two beers and various other food items. I absolutely loved running in my new city and seeing all of the scenery!!

Next year we hope to train for the half!!!

Cupcake a La Mode

My friends and I stopped by Cupcake a La Mode on Saturday an oh my, oh my. It. was. delicious.
I had the Love Doctor cupcake, which was a delicious confection of chocolate cake, strawberry buttercream, and a chocolate-covered strawberry on top. This was by far the best cupcake I've ever had in my entire life. Run, do not walk, to Cupcake a la mode right now. Even if you do not live near me.

Mother Nature's Son

This song screams summer to me.

Aixos French Restaurant

I had a group of friends come visit me this weekend. My friend Julie and I ran the Hospital Hill 10k run (David did as well and my mom ran the 5k!) . After that was over, we needed some well-deserved rest and relaxation. David and I just purchased Foodie KC cards and I noticed that Aixos was in the pack. My friend J took me there a while ago, and I remember thinking that it was simply divine, so I suggested it to my other friends. They agreed that we should try it, and we were not disappointed.
I had a salmon salad, which was filled with vegetables, fruit, and wonderful salmon. The dressing was also delicious. I also enjoyed iced coffee.
The atmosphere at Aixois was laid-back and relaxed. It felt so good to sit outside in the shade after running all morning!! Aixois also had a wonderful looking wine list, but we did not partake for fear that we would all fall asleep!

For some reason I am liking this song right now

I am aware that some people think that Paul McCartney and Wings were horrible, but I like some of their songs and of course I love Paul McCartney. Lately, I've been loving this song.

Fun Thing Friday: Barbri

Okay. This is not fun. This post is really a selfish post, so that when I start writing about how sad/mad/horrible/goofus/crazy Barbri is, you will know what I mean.

Barbri is the bar review course that I am taking, along with probably 90% of other law graduates who are taking the bar in July. So far, quite frankly, it has not been very much fun. They put the worst subjects first, like commercial paper. What is commercial paper? Apparently it is a check or a note. Yesterday I was studying it in a coffee shop with my friend and I said, "DUDE. Did you know that if you sign the back of your check you can just GIVE it to someone else and they can just take it and have it? I JUST learned something new." She was like, "um yeah, duh, doofy. You didn't learn did that ALL The time when you gave your signed checks to your mom to cash for you."

Here are the good things about studying:
- I can make my husband wait on me saying, "I NEED TO STUDY" whenever I see a job that needs to be completed.

That's it.

So you can imagine that my summer days are going to be REALLY fun.

Housewarming party: pics

We had a great time at our party and are so appreciative of everybody who came. Our new house is hours away from our old house, so it isn't like people can just walk down the street to attend.
Here is David's family, minus his sister and her kids. Please ignore my protruding stomach.

And here are our friends who came, including two of my law school friends! I was so happy to see them because they drove 2 hours to get to our party. You guys are awesome and hopefully, after we finish this bar exam, we can hang out a lot more!!! :)Finally, my cousins came. Do we look alike?
Apparently Paco was having fun with his Uncle Ryan and my mom (I won't call her grandma LOL):
Thanks everybody, for coming!!!!

Housewarming party: Decorating

We had a housewarming party on Saturday night. It was a ton of fun and David and I just love to entertain. We had about 40 of our close friends and family come into town to help us celebrate our new house.
To prep for the party, we bought these adorable napkins, silverware, and plates from a party store. We also bought some balloons and crepe paper streamers.
Our theme was loosely Kansas City, so we also had some KC books, food, and beer out for our guests to enjoy.
Overall I think that the party went very well, and I just loved decorating for everything!

Favorite Sex and the City 2 outfits

I loved the fashion in Sex and the City 2. Don't ask me why: but one of my favorite outfits of the entire movie is the one above. I especially loved the shoes that Carrie wore with that outfit. They were coral sandals. Something about wearing a huge, frilly skirt in the middle of a market is appealing and decadent to me. Fun!

I also loved all of the desert outfits the girls wore. My favorites, though, were Charlotte's and Carrie's. I love the pink halters.

And finally, again, I realize that these outfits and crazy, but I loved the ones below:

I especially loved Charlotte's. I think because I liked her hat.

What outfits do you like?

La Bodega

My friend who lives in KC took me to La Bodega a while ago and I thought it was delicious. La Bodega serves tapas, which I think translates to "small bites", meaning that you order lots of things from the menu and share them with your friends who came to the restaurant with you.

La Bodega has extremely delicious fare. My favorite is a plate of scallops. I also like the pancetta-wrapped shrimp.

We went with our little brothers. One thing to remember about La Bodega is that you should always make a reservation. Ours was for 8:30 and we were seated at around 9, which is to be expected because part of eating tapas is that you sit at your table for a long time, enjoying the atmosphere, and ordering one or two at a time for the table. So, we were not irate in the least. However, when we were seated, one of the managers came over and gave us two free tapas! That was awesome.

Like I said, though...make sure you have a reservation. We saw people waiting for way longer than 30 minutes because they hadn't bothered to call ahead. La Bodega gets crowded and people do not leave very quickly.

Memorial Day weekend

Happy late Memorial day weekend!!! Thanks to all of our veterans for making it possible for me to celebrate memorial day weekend!

This weekend was a ton of fun. On Friday evening, my parents came and saw our new house for the first time. They loved it and we had a lot of fun. Then, on Saturday, a bunch of our other family members and friends drove in for a housewarming/graduation party. We got Jack Stack BBQ and had a blast. On Sunday, I went shopping and to see Sex and the City 2:
The movie was very fun! Nothing great, as far as movies go, and I think that the first was certainly better, but it was a fun flick. The clothes were amazing and I loved the scenery while they were in the U.A.E.

On Monday, I caught up on a little bar studying and David and I grilled. The food was delicious and the sun was nice and hot. Perfect weather for Memorial Day!!
