My dog looks comatose:

A very serious discussion

David and I watched The Lion King on Friday night (don't judge; you know you love that movie too), and had a very interesting discussion regarding the best opening scenes in movies. We both agreed that the opening scene from The Lion King is probably our favorite and is probably the most famous among people of our generation:

I also like Beauty and the Beast:

David suggested that the opening scene from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark is a very well-known beginning to a movie. What are your favorite movie opening scenes?

Lake Vacation

Note: none of the photos in this post were taken by me! Ugh, and I just tried uploading them three (3) times and it didn't work so we'll just have to make do with three photos.

Two weekends ago, we went with David's family to a lake. We went last year and again this year we had a really fun time in the water. Above is a picture of David's family. Doesn't David look like his Grandma, who is standing right next to him? During the trip we celebrated the engagement of David's cousin.

We also did a lot of tubing. Yes, that's right. You are looking at the coolness of my trying to stand on the tube. Before you freak out, please note that the boat was going about 5 mph. Poor Sarah and her kids had to deal with my feeble attempts to get up:
Here is another cute picture of David's grandma with our niece, Allie, who just turned 1 on Friday!
We had a wonderful time and wish that the lake were closer to our house because we love going there for the weekend. I got up on a kneeboard and did tubing, but was not successful in my attempts to get up on skis. Maybe next year!

Note to the future

1. Painting is not fun.
2. Don't leave the paint stirrer stick on the floor on a towel. You will step on it.
3. Allowing the cats to "help" does not really work. They get paint on their fur, lick it off, and then you worry that they will die from the paint.

Fun Thing Friday

This week my fun thing is REALLY fun: Water Parks!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to get David to go to a water park tomorrow but I don't think he will fall for it. The nearest park is about 1.25 hours away (BIG SURF WATER PARK DOT COM!!!). It also costs almost $50 for us to get into the park. Then, once we are in the park we have to buy a flotation device and food for when I get hungry. On top of all of this, we have to buy the gas necessary to drive TO the park. All of these factors make it a no-go for Mr. David. Too bad because once he experienced the machine-generated waves of over three feet, the three story drop on a water slide, and the splashes waiting around every corner, I am sure he would feel that it was worth the money.

On a related note, if we did get to go to a water park, we could take Paco. Why? Because of this new handy-dandy thing that I want to buy:

I saw this while swimming in a lake this summer. I think we should get one for the entire family. "Safety first!" I always say.

My new rug

Arwen has been enjoying the new rug that she thinks my mom bought for her a few days ago. We put it in the guest bathroom and since then she has been laying on it, rolling around on it, and scratching it.

My Husband is Not a Jerk

I read another blog called That Wife Blog, which is written by a girl my age who is Morman and living in Texas. I really enjoy her posts and it is one of my favorite blogs. Yesterday she wrote a post titled, "My Husband is not a Jerk", in which she wrote about her relationship with her husband and attempted to make him look better to her readers. Previously some readers have been turned off by her words such as "My husband allows me to do this..." or "My husband made me lose weight". These statements made some readers feel that her husband is controlling.

Read her post here.

In the post, she writes about the changes she made before marrying her husband, including losing weight, getting out of debt, and not watching TV shows that promote ideas that go against the Morman faith.

The comments on that blog range from total support for her and her husband to complete disbelief that anybody would want to live in such a relationship where the wife is expected to change for the husband. Granted, That Wife did state that her husband has had to change for her, but she never actually gives examples of when he has changed.

I got to thinking about how we change for our spouses, and after working with domestic violence victims, began to wonder: when do we change too much and receive too little in return? When does the "changing to be a better person" cross over to "changing because my spouse is controlling"?

I tried to think of ways that David or I have changed since we got married and came up with a little list:
- I have become more frugal with money. David hates spending money and I have stopped buying things like books, clothes whenever I wanted, etc.
- At the same time, David has become less frugal with money. He started spending money on things that he enjoys.

Okay that's all I can think of, really.

How have you changed for your spouse, or have you not changed at all? Do you think that changing for someone else is normal and healthy?

Fun Thing Friday

Lately I've been loving sparkling water. It is so tasty and the flavors are delicious! David does not like it though because according to him it is a pretty expensive habit, meaning it is more money than zero money.

Also, for those of you who are interested, I added Matt's Blog to my bloglist here on the left hand side of my blog. So click on over and read about his adventures!

Current Events: Modern Love

I loved this article in the New York Times.

When you and your spouse disagree, what do you do?

We started a habit of asking each other for forgiveness when we treat the other badly or get overly angry, which has worked out very well. The person in the wrong has to extend the olive branch, so to speak, and it takes effort and thought for the other person to agree to forgive. I enjoyed the author's perspective in this article.

Jessi's shower

We hosted Jessi's wedding shower forever ago and I just found the pictures on my camera. I thought I would share!

I love hosting showers--I think they are so fun! This was the first shower I have been able to host at my home. Justine and I decided to have a dessert theme, with all of the shower food dessert treats, which all came out as chocolate, not surprisingly. What can I say? We are in law school and covet our chocolate.
The yummy dessert table
My homemade chocolate cupcakes with homemade icing.
The fruit punch! Mmmm.....I love this stuff. Is it appropriate to make this every day?
